Home Reading SchemeThe Home Reading Scheme operates for all children K-6. In total there are 53 levels that the children can progress through at their own rate. The children move up to the next level when they can read with an accuracy of 95%. The teacher constantly monitors these accuracy rates. We allow two years for the children to reach Level 14. This caters for those children who are a little slower to begin reading, and allows them the opportunity to catch up. From then on the children are expected to move through approximately 7 levels per year – with some form of extension available for Year 6 children and the better readers. As such the progression of ending levels for each year reads: Year 1 - Level 14, Year 2 - Level 21, Year 3 - Level 28, Year 4 - Level 35, Year 5 - Level 42 and Year 6 - Level 49. |

In-built into this scheme is also a reward system. This system is based upon the use of blue merit award cards and yellow reading awards. In levels 1 – 35 the children receive a blue card after reading 20 books and a yellow reading award after reading 40 books. In levels 36 – 42 the children receive a blue card after reading 10 books and a yellow reading award after reading 20 books. In levels 43 – 53 the children receive a blue card after reading 5 books and a yellow reading award after reading 10 books. The difference between levels is to compensate for the increasing difficulty of the texts. |

After a child
has received 7 yellow reading awards they then receive the next reward.
The first of these rewards is a bronze medallion. The children then begin
reading again until they have achieved another 7 reading awards. This time
the child receives a silver medallion. This process continues on with the
child receiving a gold medallion. After this the child progresses to
bronze 2, silver 2 and gold 2 in keeping with our merit system. This next
step in the reward system takes the form of a banner.
