PEER SUPPORT The Peer Support Program is a peer leadership program which: “aims to provide an environment for developing understandings, attitudes and skills needed to live safe and healthy lives, realise potential and contribute positively to society.” (The Peer Support Program Primary Manual, 2002) The benefits are for the children themselves, the school community and the wider community. |

The year 5 and 6 children at Mount St Thomas attended a Peer Leadership Training course which took place over two days at Wollongong T.A.F.E. campus . The students were taught about the Peer Support program and how to be effective group leaders. The school was then divided up into 34 groups of about 10 children. Every Monday the leaders were briefed on the weeks new lesson and it was then delivered on Thursday in a 30 minute session. These lessons took place over twelve weeks. The class teacher’s role was to actively supervise. Weekly lessons focused around group work and maintaining positive relationships.
