CLASSROOM DISCIPLINE POLICY

RATIONALE:

"Responsible choices are vital for our children. Assertive Discipline supports self-esteem and responsibility. It provides positive reinforcement in a clear, concise, understandable manner for teacher and student."

With consistent and positive reinforcement as the keynote, Mount St Thomas Public School uses an Assertive Discipline plan based on the following thinking:

Teachers have the right and responsibility:

  • to establish rules and directions that clearly defines the limits of acceptable and unacceptable student behaviour.

  • to teach students to consistently follow these rules and directions throughout the school day and year.

  • to ask for assistance from parents and administration when support is needed in handling the behaviour of students.

Students have the right:

  • to a teacher who will set firm and consistent limits.

  • to a teacher who will provide them with consistent positive encouragement.

  • to know what behaviour they need to engage in that will enable them to succeed.

  • to a teacher who will take the time to teach them how to manage their own behaviour.

At Mount St Thomas Public School, the discipline plan consists of the following:

  • Rules that students must follow at all times.

  • Positive recognition that students will receive for following the rules.

  • Consequences that result when students choose not to follow the rules.

IMPLEMENTATION:

With positive reinforcement and consistency as the keynotes, we have introduced our Classroom Discipline Plan which:

  • clearly defines the limits of acceptable behaviour;

  • teaches children how to manage their own behaviour AND

  • develops within children an understanding of what behaviours they need to engage in to achieve maximum progress and success.

Teachers give special attention to the teaching of classroom rules and consequences. The emphasis is on children making choices and accepting the consequences for their behaviour.

To attain these goals, we have organised our Classroom Discipline Policy along the following lines:

  • Each class has a set of 5 - 6 RULES, which ensure orderly responsible behaviour by students to promote optimum learning.

  • Each class has their own set of POSITIVE consequences, which are readily distributed to acknowledge good behaviour.

  • These positive classroom consequences are in turn an integral part of the whole school Merit Award System. Children receive blue merit certificates as rewards for good behaviour, manners and work. The Merit System works on a colour grading as follows:

  • 5 blue certificates - Bronze Merit award
  • another 5 blue certificates - Silver Merit Award
  • another 5 blue certificates - Gold Merit Award
  • another 10 blue certificates - Bronze II Merit Award
  • another 10 blue certificates - Silver II Merit Award
  • another 10 blue certificates - Gold II Merit Award
  • another 15 blue certificates - Bronze III Merit Award

Each level of achievement is acknowledged at an assembly presentation Each level of achievement is acknowledged at an assembly presentation and in the weekly school newsletter. On attaining a Gold Merit Award, children are invited once a term to Morning Tea with the Principal in her office.

The school has a standard set of NEGATIVE consequences for inappropriate behaviour (i.e. breaking class rules), which consistently applies to every child. Each class has on display a set of rules, which must be followed.

  • The Principal consistently provides support for both the positive and negative consequences.

  • Parents are involved in the process firstly, by receiving an individualised letter for their child’s class detailing class rules, the class set of consequences for positive behaviour, the standard set of consequences for negative behaviour and Severe Misbehaviour .

CONSEQUENCES FOR NEGATIVE BEHAVIOUR

If a student chooses to break the rules on any day, the following consequences will apply during that day. All classes adhere to the same consequences and these are enforced consistently.

1st time: Warning - name recorded [clipboard, whiteboard, chalkboard]

2nd time: One cross after name - 10 minutes supervised in isolation

3rd time: Two crosses after name - sent to another classroom for a negotiated time,

Notes to accompany child on a "time-out" are given to the child to take home that day as a means of notifying parents.

4th time: Three crosses after name - sent to Principal

Severe Misbehaviour

Immediately sent to the Principal and the Parents contacted.

Severe Misbehaviour includes the use of violence, disobedience or offensive language or behaviour. The Principal’s actions will include one or more of the following:

  • Sanctions applied to student

  • Behaviour programs implemented

  • In-school withdrawal

  • Suspension

*******************************************************************************************

Appropriate and positively acknowledged behaviour is essential to develop student self-esteem, responsibility and to maximise learning. Children also need to earn the right to participate in outside school activities / excursions by displaying appropriate behaviour and applying themselves to their work.

The Classroom Discipline Policy is aimed at best supporting your child in all of these areas to ensure they have a happy and productive school life.

The approach is highly successful as it offers known expectations of successful behaviour for students, greatly emphasises the positive consequences and offers consistency in each classroom at all times.
