MERIT AWARDS

With positive reinforcement and consistency as the keynotes, we have introduced our Classroom Discipline Plan which:

  • clearly defines the limits of acceptable behaviour;

  • teaches children how to manage their own behaviour AND

  • develops within children an understanding of what behaviours they need to engage in to achieve maximum progress and success.

Teachers give special attention to the teaching of classroom rules and consequences. The emphasis is on children making choices and accepting the consequences for their behaviour.

To attain these goals, we have organised our Classroom Discipline Policy along the following lines:

  • Each class has a set of 5 - 6 RULES, which ensure orderly responsible behaviour by students to promote optimum learning.

  • Each class has their own set of POSITIVE consequences, which are readily distributed to acknowledge good behaviour.

  • These positive classroom consequences are in turn an integral part of the whole school Merit Award System. Children receive blue merit certificates as rewards for good behaviour, manners and work. The Merit System works on a colour grading as follows:

5 blue certificates - Bronze Merit Award

10 blue certificates - Silver Merit Award

          15 blue certificates - Gold Merit Award

another 10 blue certificates - Bronze II Merit Award

another 10 blue certificates - Silver II Merit Award

another 10 blue certificates - Gold II Merit Award

another 15 blue certificates - Bronze III Merit Award

Each level of achievement is acknowledged at an assembly presentation and in the weekly school newsletter. On attaining a Gold Merit Award, children are invited once a term to Morning Tea with the Principal in her office.

Children who recieve our weekly awards at our Assembly can be seen through this link.
