SPORT
POLICY STATEMENT
RATIONALE:
Sport
is an important component of Australian life and is a significant element
in the school curriculum.
Sport
is an integral part in an individual’s development and provides a unique
learning environment to realise immediate and long-term social, physical,
aesthetic, emotional and moral benefits.
Mount
St Thomas school attempts to provide children with experiences in a wide
variety of sports (competitive and social) and fitness activities.
OUTCOMES:

Enjoyment,
participation, skill development and increased fitness by students.

Development
of responsible sporting attitudes and a healthy approach to life-long
recreational and sporting activities.

Offering
a wide variety of sports from which the children can select.

Children
will develop positive sporting attitudes e.g. teamwork, co-operation.
TOP
GUIDELINES:
-
All
children are encouraged to be active participants in sport both
competitive and social.
-
Where
possible, children who wish to participate in PSSA competitions will
be catered for.
-
When
representing the School in Interschool competitions, representatives
are required to wear the
School Sports Uniform.
TOP
IMPLEMENTATION:
-
Children
in Years 3-6 who do not participate in Interschool sport are involved
in skill based activities which culminate in the playing of a game,
utilising the skills developed.
-
Carnivals
are held for Primary age children in swimming, cross-country and
athletics. Children in Year 2 who turn 8 years of age are allowed to
participate if their skills are of a high level.

Interschool
Sport:
-
Throughout
the year teams made up of children in Years 3-6 participate in 2 terms
of competitions conducted by the Central Wollongong PSSA.

Junior Boys/Girls Tee Ball
Senior Cricket
Kanga Cricket (juniors)
Dragon Tag (seniors)
Term 2

Girls Soccer (junior/senior)
Rugby League (junior/senior)
Term 3

Netball (junior/senior)
Soccer (junior/senior)

Selected
squads compete in the PSSA Swimming, Cross Country and Athletics
carnivals.

When
appropriate, teams compete in State knockouts or other external
competitions.

Parental
permission is gained for children to participate in the various team
sports at the beginning of the year.
As rugby league is a contact sport, specific permission must be
gained prior to the commencement of the competition.

Most
sports are conducted at local venues where it is possible to walk to
the venue. It is sometimes necessary to use private transport or buses
to get to venues.

Intraschool
sport:
-
Children
in Years K-2 participate in a school based program once a week.
-
Children
in Years K-6 receive the expertise of employed gym instructors through
a 5 week gymnastic program.

Children
in Years 3-6 participate in an 8 week dance program.
Fitness:
-
Fitness
is conducted twice a week for 20 minute periods.
-
Activities
include circuits, cross-country training, walking, mini games and
athletics skills.
Outside
Assistance:
-
When
available, local sporting bodies are utilised to provide expert
coaching to interested children e.g. rugby league, soccer, basketball.
-
Parents
are welcomed and encouraged to assist in the sporting activities.

Coaching
clinics - HAWKS - speakers (Steelers).
Times:
During
the terms of PSSA competition involvement sport is conducted prior to
lunch so as to minimise the time children spend in the heat of the day.
Equipment:
Equipment
may be borrowed by children during lunch time.
An appropriate system will be used to monitor the borrowing and
return of the equipment. |
