MOUNT ST THOMAS PUBLIC SCHOOL

FIRST AID POLICY STATEMENT

RATIONALE:

As part of Mount St Thomas duty of care for students, minor first aid will be administered to students for their care and well-being.

OUTCOMES:

·      Students will feel comforted and cared for in time of distress following minor injury or just feeling unwell.

·      By providing treatment to minor ailments it will avoid the need for further attention by parents, doctors, etc.

GUIDELINES:

·      Only minor ailments will be attended to eg. abrasions, nausea, bleeding nose, etc.

·      Where concern or doubt exists in relation to extent of injury/ailment, the parents will be contacted for further determination of action.

·      If injury is substantial and parents or emergency contact cannot be reached, the school will contact the Ambulance Service and suitable medical attention will be accessed.

·        Office staff are fully trained in First Aid and CPR.

IMPLEMENTATION:

  1. Children feeling unwell (ie nausea, headache, feeling hot etc.) will be sent / taken to sickbay where their temperature will be checked by a digital thermometer placed under armpit.

If temperature is normal, the child will be able to rest in the sick bay for 15 minutes and then checked by staff again.  If feeling better child can resume class.  If child is still unwell, parents will be requested to take child home.

If the temperature is:   * between 37.3º C – 38.0º C it will be checked again in

                                                       15-20 minutes and if still high parents will be contacted.

* above  38.0º C parents will be contacted and requested to take child and seek appropriate follow-up

* above 39.5º C and the parents are uncontactable, emergency treatment will be sought via an ambulance.

  1. Following minor injury, the student should report to the duty teacher who will direct     the child to the office for further first-aid treatment if necessary.

3    Following treatment of minor ailments or if the child indicates they are feeling well  enough for normal classroom activities, they will return to class.

4    If the child’s injury prohibits movement to the office, the teacher will send for the ancillary staff member and the principal.

5    If injury is substantial and further medical attention is sought, parents or emergency contact will be notified immediately.  If contact is unable to be made, a staff member will accompany the child in the ambulance to the hospital.
