MOUNT ST THOMAS PUBLIC SCHOOL
Revised June, 2002
ASSESSING AND REPORTING TO PARENTS
POLICY STATEMENT
RATIONALE:
Assessment is the process of gathering data and
making judgements about students needs, strengths, abilities, interests
and achievement of outcomes.
Assessment of student progress is integral to
teaching and learning. It may be informal as part of daily teaching
strategies or formalised through activities that are designed specifically
to indicate student achievement and progress.
This equips us to provide parents with information
in relation to their child’s individual progress and performance at
school.
TOP
OUTCOMES:
-
To provide an individual written and/or oral
report on each child in all Key Learning Areas (K.L.A.'s).
-
To show a progression of each child’s
individual achievement in all K.L.A’s.
-
To use assessment as a way of identifying
areas which require particular emphasis or directions that their
future learning will take.
TOP
GUIDELINES:
Assessment involves the process of:
-
gathering information about student knowledge,
understandings, skills, attitudes and values.
-
evidence of student progress can be achieved
by observation, listening, structured student interviews, student /
teacher discussions, student explanation and demonstration,
analysing samples of student work, developing student portfolios and
pen and paper tests.
-
summarising, recording and storing
information.
-
interpreting the information in terms of
outcomes.
-
using information to make judgements about the
level of student achievement, to identify future learning needs, to
provide information at school or system level and to report student
progress to parents.
TOP
IMPLEMENTATION:
An integral part of pupil assessment of
achievement and progress is the communication of this information to
parents. Reporting to parents can be informal through daily interaction
before, during and after school. Parents are encouraged to discuss and
check on their child’s progress at any time and are made welcome in the
classroom. Parents who are involved in school activities such as Canteen,
P & C, School Council, sport, excursions, fundraising, helping in the
classroom and library gain valuable insight and understanding of their
child’s progress.
