ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION POLICY STATEMENT
RATIONALE:
Environmental
education is a life-long process. It
develops awareness, knowledge and understandings of the environment,
positive and balanced attitudes towards it and skills which will enable
students to participate in determining and improving the quality of the
environment. Environmental
education is education in, about and for the environment.
OUTCOMES:
Students will display
understandings and commitment to:

Developing in students an understanding of global interdependence
and concern for the quality of the global environment. |

Involving students in studies of local environments and action to
conserve local environments and/or to improve their quality |

Building on the experiences, perceptions, feeling and existing
knowledge of students and helping them to explore questions, issues
and problems which arise from their own understandings of their
environmental rights and responsibilities. |
| Developing values: |
Helping
students to value their natural and cultural heritage and their
interdependence with people and environments in other parts of the world |

Developing in students the personal knowledge, skills and
commitments which enable them to participate effectively in social
action for environmental protection and improvement. |

Environmental Education is mandatory in the whole school
curriculum.

The aims and objectives of environmental education are integrated
across all KLAs.

Environmental education is an integral part of K-6 classroom
teaching and learning activities.

IMPLEMENTATION:
-
Students develop positive behaviours and a concern for the quality
of their environment by active
participation in school and community environmental programmes and
activities such as S.C.R.A.P. recycling, Wollongong City Council recycling
and landfill reduction programs, reusing, reducing and recycling
materials, water, power and resource conservation, care and appreciation
of our school built environment, its natural fauna and flora, green waste
management, litter control and the effects of environmental pollution -
all at an individual, class and school level.

Students environmental experiences include utilisation of the
school environment, community, parks & gardens, Steelworks, beaches,
rainforests, Mt Kembla Field
Studies Centre, Botanic Gardens, Science Centre, wildlife parks, National
Parks, Museum and Zoo.

Students celebrate and participate in Wollongong City Council
Council Rise’n Shine Campaign, Keep Australia Beautiful, Bushcare, World Environment
Day, Water Week, World No Tobacco Day, Australia Day, Clean Up Australia
Day and Arbor Day.
